Selkies - The Seal Folk - Celtic Mythology

Along the windswept coasts of Scotland and Ireland, old stories tell of the Selkies — mystical beings who live as seals in the sea but can shed their skins to become human on land. These enchanting creatures are said to be gentle, soulful, and deeply tied to the rhythms of the ocean.

According to legend, a Selkie who loses or hides their sealskin cannot return to the water, often trapped in human form until it's found again. Many tales speak of Selkie women who marry mortal men, only to eventually reclaim their skin and vanish back into the waves, drawn by an irresistible longing for the sea.
